All summer, Jess pushes himself to be the fastest boy in the fifth grade, running mile after hilly mile on the family farm. When the year's first schoolyard race is run, his victory is stolen by a new girl who doesn't even know enough to stay off the boys' side of the playground. But instead of becoming rivals, they become friends. Jess guides Leslie, the city girl, through life in the country, and she draws him into the imaginary world of Terabithia. Here, Leslie and Jess are safe from bullies and ridicule. One day, however, that tranquility is shattered when tragedy forces one of them to reign in Terabithia alone. In this poignant, Newbery Medal-winning novel, Katherine Paterson beautifully illustrates the joy and pain of growing up. Narrator Tom Stechschulte's warm, lightly accented voice brings Jess, Leslie and the magical world of Terabithia to life for the listener.

This children's classic has been recorded several times, but Robert Sean Leonard has crafted a recording that earns its place among the best. Leonard brings Jess to life, his yearning and striving, his love for his family, and his secret pleasure--his art. Leonard imbues the story with emotion. Though he doesn't give all the characters their own voices, he builds their identities clearly. When Jess decides to allow Leslie into his world, we feel his caution but also his understanding of Leslie's difficult position, and we share the surprise as their friendship blossoms. And when tragedy strikes, we are there with Jess as he finds the strength and courage to go on. W.L.S. (c) AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine

Paterson's Newbery-winning novel becomes an entertaining and dramatic audiobook via Leonard's accomplished reading. Jess Aarons is eager to start fifth grade. He's been practicing his sprints all summer, determined to become the fastest runner at school. All seems to be on track, until the new girl in class (who also happens to be Jess's new next-door neighbor), Leslie Burke, leaves all the boys in the dust, including Jess. After this rather frustrating introduction, Jess and Leslie soon become inseparable. Together, they create an imaginary, secret kingdom in the woods called Terabithia that can be reached only by swinging across a creek bed on a rope. But one morning a tragic accident befalls Leslie as she ventures alone to Terabithia, and Jess's life is changed forever. Leonard deftly interprets the strands of humor, realism and heart-wrenching emotion woven into Paterson's fine tale. His careful and authentic handling of Jess's anger and grief in the aftermath of the accident is sure to touch listeners. Contemporary instrumental interludes featuring guitar, piano and drums signal the beginning and end of each tape side. Ages 9-up.
